China reveals second round of glyphosate inspections
China is expanding its environmental impact inspections of glyphosate herbicide manufacturers. Some 18 Chinese companies are taking part in the second assessment of environmentally compliant manufacturers, reports the China Crop Protection Industry Association (CCPIA). The first list of a planned three was published in June (Agrow No 691, p 21). Four out of ten applicants passed the first assessment. The CCPIA believes that the latest and longer list is an indicator of the government’s tightening controls on the glyphosate industry. The evaluation is aimed at reducing the impact on the environment caused by glyphosate manufacturing via the intermediate, N-(phosphonomethyl) iminodiacetic acid. The 18 companies are spread throughout the provinces and regions of Shandong, Anhui, Jiangxi, Chongqing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Sichuan and Henan.
