Brazil group seeks mandatory GMO refuge areas

A Brazilian maize grower association is seeking mandatory refuge areas with the planting of genetically modified insect-resistant maize in Mato Grosso state. The state’s soybean and maize producers association, the MT-Aprosoja, has called for regulations on the matter in order to verify that biotechnology offered in Brazil remains effective in controlling insect pests. It recommends that GM seed suppliers submit protocols to the Ministry of Agriculture and the percentage refuge should be determined by those companies’ advice.
