EU organic farm area on the rise

Over a decade, the area of land under organic farming in the EU increased on average by about 500,000 ha per year, reaching 9.6 million ha in 2011, says the latest report on the sector by the European Commission. Almost half of this (about 45%) was permanent pasture, followed by cereals (around 15%) and permanent crops (about 13%). The total area represents 5.4% of the EU’s total utilised agricultural area (UAA), with only five member states having a share of 10-20% of their UAA: Austria, Sweden, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Latvia.
