US judge strikes down Hawaiian ordinance

A US federal judge has declared invalid US state of Hawaii's Kauai County Council ordinance that imposed restrictions on pesticide use and required disclosure of which genetically modified crops are grown on the island. US District Judge Barry Kurren ruled that the ordinance is pre-empted by state pesticide law and by regulations under the purview of the state Department of Agriculture. The decision is a major victory for biotechnology companies with operations on the Hawaiian island, notably Syngenta, BASF, DuPont Pioneer and Dow AgroSciences subsidiary Agrigenetics.
