EU approval for sucrose as basic substance

The European Commission has issued formal EU agrochemical approval to sucrose as a “basic substance” for use as an elicitor of a crop’s natural defence mechanism. The approval is effective from January 1st 2015 and has no expiry date. The French research institute, Institut Technique de l’Agriculture Biologique, submitted the application for use against codling moths (Cydia pomonella) on apples and European corn borers (Ostrinia nubilalis) on sweetcorn (Agrow No 694, p 18). Application rates are limited to a maximum of 100 g/ha per treatment. Basic substances are not predominantly used for agrochemical purposes but are considered useful in plant protection in a product consisting of the substance and water.
