Colombia sets emergency measures against guava pest
Colombia’s Ministry of Agriculture has declared a phytosanitary state of emergency in two national departments over the presence of guava cottony scale (Capulinia spp) on guava trees. The emergency runs until August 22nd 2015. Guava growers are to follow state recommendations, including: crop monitoring; making two foliar applications of insecticides; conducting dry or dead plant material pruning; and cutting dead trees into fragments subsequently applying insecticides. The ICA has called on growers to promptly report any appearances of the pest, and to remove and dispose of any propagation material, but not move it to “pest free zones”.
