Australia debuts bee protection app

The Australian industry association, CropLife Australia, and the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council have joined forces to promote the world's first smartphone application aimed at keeping bees safe from pesticide applications. The BeeConnected app allows farmers to log the location of their property through a Google Maps-based platform and beekeepers can log the present or future locations of their hives. When a hive is logged near a farmer's property, both users are sent automated notifications and they can communicate about their activities via a secure messaging service. Farmers and contractors can also use the app to log the time and location of specific agrochemical applications and beekeepers will be notified. Details are available at www.croplife.org.au/beeconnected.
