EU Health chief promises review of GMO/agchem rules
The intention to review all EU legislation on genetically modified crops, and to take greater account of member states’ negative views on the technology, has been confirmed as a key objective by Vytenis Andriukaitis, the nominated EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety. Decisions on GMOs should fall within the competencies of individual member states, he told MEPs at a hearing at the European Parliament. However, such a policy will lead to cross-border issues that will be a “very complex” problem to resolve, he noted.
