New Zealand EPA denies garden fungicide application

The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has turned down a request by New Zealand company Tui Products (Mount Maunganui South) to manufacture the fungicide, Tui Disease Eliminator (chlorothalonil 90 g/litre), for use on fruit, vegetables and ornamentals by home gardeners. An EPA decision-making committee identified significant risks to human health that outweighed potential benefits. It could not be assumed that home gardeners would wear correct levels of personal protective equipment and young children coming into contact with recently treated surfaces would not be at risk of exposure, the committee concluded. A hearing on the application was held in August.
