EU non-crop approval nears for clothianidin
A positive opinion supporting the EU approval of clothianidin as a non-crop insecticide has been adopted by the Biocidal Products Committee of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The active ingredient is intended for use in paint-on formulations for controlling insects such as house flies in animal housing and for domestic premises by non-professional users. However, clothianidin would be a candidate for substitution because it is very persistent and toxic, says the Committee. Such a designation would require EU member states to check if safer alternatives were available before granting product approvals.
