China reviews Bt rice biosafety certificates

China’s Ministry of Agriculture is considering extending biosafety certificates for the country’s only two approved strains of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt rice, Huahui No1 and Bt Shanyou 63, reports China’s state media outlet, Xinhua. The biosafety certificates expired in August this year. An application for extension was submitted by Huazhong Agricultural University in June this year, and is under evaluation. “If no safety issues arise during the biosafety certificate’s period of validity, the certificate should be renewed. Whether or not it will be renewed, and when, will depend upon the progress of the evaluation process,” a representative from the Ministry was reported as saying.
