Cameroon to start GM cotton field trials
Field trials of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt cotton are about to commence in Cameroon. The Cameroon public sector cotton corporation, Société de développement du coton (Sodecoton), is to “start the second phase of research” on Bt cotton, newswire business in Cameroon reports. The first phase involved laboratory testing, while the field trials are anticipated to last three years, with plans to commercially introduce the crop in 2017. The research concluded that the GMO strain currently tested by Sodecoton is more robust against herbicides and more resistant to diseases, the newswire adds.
