Quarter of surveyed food violates Brazil agchem residue rules

Fewer than four in 100 (3.8%) samples of six Brazilian foodstuffs revealed pesticide residues above permitted levels in 2012, but violations of at least one type occurred in a quarter of cases, a national pesticide residue analysis in foods programme, the Para, study has found. However, 21% contained residues of a pesticide not approved for use on the crop but no other violation, another 1.9% contained the same plus an approved pesticide above permitted limits, and 1.9% just with residues above limits. A quarter contained at least one or the other.
