Lepidopteran resistance to Bt maize in US

US researchers have reported "compelling evidence" for the first case of field resistance to a lepidopteran pest in genetically modified insect-resistant maize in the US. The scientists found a "surprisingly high" level of resistance to the Bt Cry1F toxin in fall armyworms (Spodoptera frugiperda) in the south-eastern US. Unexpected survival of the pest on Cry1F maize has been reported on several occasions in the region and in Brazil but scientific documentation of field resistance has not been reported anywhere except Puerto Rico, the researchers note.
