Australia approves Monsanto's Truflex canola
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has approved the commercial release of Monsanto's genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Truflex Roundup Ready (MON88302) canola. The canola tolerates higher rates of glyphosate herbicide and allows greater flexibility in glyphosate applications than the first-generation Roundup Ready canola, which has been grown in Australia since 2008. Earlier this year, the OGTR concluded that Truflex canola posed negligible risks to human health and the environment. Food Standards Australia New Zealand approved food derived from the canola line last year. It has been authorised for cultivation in the US and Canada, with food-use approvals in the EU, Japan, Mexico and South Korea.
