India to phase out lindane

The Indian Central Insecticides Board's Registration Committee has decided to phase out the import, manufacture and use of the organochlorine insecticide, lindane. The Ministry of Agriculture proposed in 2006 to ban the import, manufacture and all uses of the active ingredient except for termite control in buildings, termite control in sugar cane, and for export ( Agrow No 491, p 15). The Parties to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) agreed to ban the ai last year ( Agrow No 567, p 21).
