India targets illegal pesticide sales
Some 2.4% of pesticide samples tested by central and state insecticide inspectors in India during the fiscal year 2013-14 were misbranded, says Minister of State for Agriculture Dr Sanjeev Balyan. Out of a total of 63,557 samples of pesticides that were drawn, 1,495 samples were found to be misbranded. Prosecution has been launched in 476 cases. In the country’s Pesticides Management Bill 2008, pending in Parliament, punishments have been prescribed for “misbranded”, “sub-standard” and “spurious” pesticides.
