The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given safety clearance to Monsanto’s genetically modified stacked-trait MON89034xMON88017 maize for import and use in food and feed. MON89034xMON88017 is sold as Genuity VT Triple PRO in the US. MON89034 (YieldGard VT PRO) is resistant to lepidopteran pests such as European corn borers ( Ostrinia nubilalis) and is sold as YieldGard VT PRO in the US. MON88017 (YieldGard VT Rootworm/RR2) is resistant to corn rootworms ( Diabrotica spp) and tolerant to the herbicide, glyphosate. Both single-trait lines received EU approval for import last year ( Agrow No 579, 11). The EFSA’s opinion will go forward to the European Commission for consideration.
