US states seek spirotetramat use
Three US states have applied to the EPA for emergency exemptions to use Bayer CropScience’s insecticide, Movento (spirotetramat), to control thrips on onions. The state agriculture departments of New Mexico, Ohio and Wisconsin are seeking permission to use the product on a total of 8,600 acres (3,480 ha) in areas where there is resistance to alternative insecticides. The EPA granted similar exemptions for the first time last year. All spirotetramat registrations have been annulled by a court ruling and the EPA has issued a cancellation order (see this issue).
