Brazil seizes illegal glyphosate imports
Brazilian authorities seized several illegal shipments of the herbicide, glyphosate, at a port in Sao Paulo last month. Inspectors from the Ministry of the Environment’s protection agency, the Ibama, sequestrated some 360 tonnes of the herbicide of Chinese origin due to excessive levels of the impurity, N-nitrosoglyphosate. Each of the relevant herbicide registrants will be fined R$1.4 million ($800,000 at the current rate) for the import of toxic substances, the Ibama says. The importer has been fined R$9,000 ($5,000) for not being registered. The Ibama discovered in February impurities in some batches up to 70 times the permitted limit of 1mg/kg.
