US judge uproots Hawaii County GM crop ban

A US federal judge has declared invalid a Hawaii County local law that restricted the cultivation of genetically modified crops, concluding that the ordinance is pre-empted by state pesticide law and regulations enacted by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture . The state legislature's clear intent for "an exclusive, uniform, and comprehensive state statutory scheme on the precise subject matter addressed by the Ordinance 13-121" pre-empts the county's ban on GM crops, US District Judge Barry Kurren explained in his ruling.
