India initiates safe pesticide use campaign

India’s Ministry of Agriculture has initiated an awareness campaign to carry the message of safe and judicious use of pesticides to farmers and other stakeholders. Called the “Grow Safe Food” campaign, it carries the message of five essential principles of judicious pesticides use: application on the right crop; against pests for which the pesticide has been approved; at the right time; at approved rates; and  approved method of application. The message is sought to be conveyed through hoardings and banners in regional languages in village administrations. Advisories are being sent to pesticide dealers to build awareness on the importance of instructions on pesticide labels and leaflets for production of safe food and other agricultural produce.  Dealers are being exhorted to disseminate the message among their farmer customers.
