Australia OKs GM cereal output trait trials

The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has concluded that proposed field trials of genetically modified wheat and barley with altered output traits pose “negligible” risk to human health or the environment. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation applied to conduct field trials of 14 GM wheat and barley lines that have altered grain composition or enhanced nutrient utilisation efficiency. The trials would assess the growth and yield characteristics of the new cereal lines, and test dough characteristics and end-product quality.
