US EPA OKs Poncho/Votivo for maize
The US EPA has approved the sale and use of Bayer CropScience’s combination seed treatment, Poncho/Votivo for use on maize. It combines the insecticidal active ingredient, clothianidin, and a Bacillus firmus-based bionematicide. It provides increased control of wireworms ( Agriotes spp), black cutworms ( Agrotis ipsilon), white grubs ( Liogenys spp) and other early season pests, Bayer says. The company has planned to market Votivo products in the US from 2011 ( Agrow No 582, p 27). It is also targeted for use on: cotton with the insecticides, thiodicarb + imidacloprid; and soybeans with the fungicide, trifloxystrobin. Bayer acquired the B firmus technology from Israeli biopesticide company AgroGreen last year ( Agrow No 565, p 2).
