EFSA mulls agchem assessment in protected crops
Specific environmental risk assessment methods will have to be developed for pesticide use in certain protected crop systems, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says. After a study of such systems, the EFSA has concluded that they “generally do not prevent emissions” of pesticides into the environment and that development of an environmental risk assessment “is warranted in some cases”. It proposes to base its initial work on the assumption that pesticide emissions from protected crop systems are no different to those from open field crops. Further analysis is needed to identify the systems where emissions differ from field crops, so that specific assessment methods can be developed accordingly.
