EFSA studies pesticide metabolites

Tests on metabolites, degradation and reaction products of pesticides could be reduced by using a method of setting minimum toxicological thresholds for substances with similar chemical structures, concludes a study commissioned by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Only substances that exceeded these thresholds would trigger a requirement for further testing on the dietary risk to consumers, suggests the report from the UK Chemicals Regulation Directorate. However, further work is needed to improve the reliability of predicting genotoxicity characteristics, it cautions.
