Austria authorises maize STs under stricter rules

Austrian authorities have granted authorisation for use of maize and pumpkin (for pumpkin seed oil) insecticidal seed treatments this year despite concerns over their effect on bees. The federal office for food safety, the BAES, has attached stricter mandatory use conditions on such products. They include: the continuing use of pneumatic seed drills; the strict avoidance of drift into neighbouring crop fields during planting; review of resistance of seed coatings to abrasion (up to 0.75 g abrasion per 100,000 maize grains allowed); proper labelling of seed and of handling treated seed; and a general restriction of approvals for use against corn rootworms and wireworms on maize.
