EU stalls again on GM crop import approvals
EU member states have once again failed to the reach the qualified majority needed to approve the import of genetically modified crops for use in food and feed. The Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health considered European Commission proposals to approve Monsanto’s insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant MON89034xNK603 maize ( Agrow No 578, p 8) and Syngenta’s insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant Bt11xGA21 maize ( Agrow No 577, p 13), and to renew the approval for Syngenta’s insect-resistant Bt11 maize ( Agrow No 562, p 9) at its meeting in April. However, the Committee could not agree on whether to accept or reject the proposals. The documents will now be forwarded to EU Ministers for a decision.
