Japan OKs import of PRSV-resistant papaya
Japan has approved the import of genetically modified papaya ringspot virus-resistant papayas, says Dennis Gonsalves, director of the USDA’s Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center (Hilo, Hawaii), as reported in the news service, westerngarmpress.com. Dr Gonsalves revealed the information to delegates at last month’s annual Western Society of Weed Science conference in Hawaii. Two GM papaya varieties, Sunup and Rainbow, have been grown in Hawaii since 1998, and account for around 80% of the papayas produced on the island, he reportedly says. Exports to Japan account for 25-30% of the non-GM papayas produced.
