ECPA calls for EU agchem policy to support innovation

Agrochemical innovation in Europe is being stifled by the current EU regulatory framework, with its emphasis on hazard-based legislation and often inconsistent application of the precautionary principle, warns Jean-Philippe Azoulay, president of the European Crop Protection Association (ECPA). That risks denying farmers the new solutions they need to fight crop pests and diseases, and could affect European agricultural productivity, he said at a conference in December. To achieve the goal of providing sufficient food, “the EU needs a new policy framework that is friendlier to innovation, jobs and growth, and that takes a balanced, science-based approach to regulation”.
