Australasia to OK Monsanto's SmartStax Pro

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) proposes to approve the import of food derived from Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant SmartStax Pro (MON87411) maize. It expresses a double-stranded RNA containing sequences from the DvSnf7 gene and the Bt Cry3B1 toxin for the control of corn rootworms (Diabrotica spp). The maize is also tolerant to the herbicide, glyphosate. Monsanto has applied for USDA deregulation and EPA approval for MON87411 and it is also under review in Canada. The FSANZ assessment is open to public comment until February 10th 2015.
