US EPA grants permanent tolerance exemption for viral bioherbicide

The US EPA has amended the temporary tolerance exemption for tobacco mild green mosaic tobamovirus strain U2 to a permanent exemption when applied as a post-emergence herbicide to fodder crops (EPA groups 17 and 18). The move follows the approval of US company BioProdex' (Gainesville, Florida) virus-based bioherbicide, SolviNix LC. The EPA proposed the approval last month for the control of tropical soda apples (Solanum viarum) in pastures and wooded areas that are fenced to contain grazing animals.
