Production up as profits fall in Zhejiang, China

Profits for agrochemical companies in the Chinese province of Zhejiang continued to slide in the first quarter of 2010, despite rising export and production volumes, according to the Zhejiang Agrochemical Industry Association. Agrochemical production in the province rose by 2.3% to 101,307 tonnes, whereas the combined net profit of companies included in the statistics halved to Yuan 94.3 million ($13.8 million at the current rate). The manufacturing figures cover 60 active ingredients, including 21 insecticides, 16 fungicides, 21 herbicides and two plant growth regulators. The province manufactured 413,900 tonnes of agrochemicals in 2009 ( Agrow No 586, p 22).
