Brazil cancels trichlorfon registrations
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed the cancellation of approvals for the insecticide/acaricide, trichlorfon. The Ministry of the Environment’s protection agency, the Ibama, called for its cancellation last autumn ( Agrow No 580, p 26). The Ibama found adverse effects on birds, bees and aquatic organisms from use of the pesticide. The Ministry of Agriculture notes that several minor crops would be left without chemical controls after cancellation of the insecticide. But the only registrants were not interested in supplying data on environmental effects. Therefore, the ban on the production, import, and sale of trichlorfon-based products has been confirmed. The Ministry of Health also sought its cancellation ( Agrow No 582, p 20).
