Brazil issues phosmet use restrictions

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture has issued a technical opinion on the recent evaluation by the toxicology authorities on the insecticide, phosmet. The national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, proposed restrictions on the use of phosmet late last year ( Agrow No 582, p 20), and sought to reclassify the active ingredient as a class I (extremely toxic) pesticide, from its previous class II (highly toxic) categorisation. As the agency would allow continued use of products in water-soluble packaging on certain “essential” crops, the Ministry will only carry out a “use of non-water-soluble packaging stocks plan, until the registrant company conforms to the Anvisa’s proposed actions”.
