Rice disease resistance markers found

Researchers have identified a genetic marker for resistance to two important rice fungal diseases, rice sheath blight ( Rhizoctonia solani) and rice blast ( Magnaporthe oryzae). The researchers, from the US Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center (Stuttgart, Arkansas), who identified the genetic locus containing genes conferring resistance to sheath blight, say that the marker has a “major effect on controlling the disease” and that its identification will ease the way to developing new rice lines resistant to it.
