French MPs reject ban on neonicotinoids

French MPs have turned down a proposal by the country’s Green Party to include a completel ban on neonicotinoid insecticides in the government’s environmental initiative, the Grenelle de l'Environment, reports the French newswire, Agrisalon.com. Serious damage to bee colonies was cited as the reason to ban the insecticides. Opponents of the proposed ban reasoned that the barring of an active ingredient approved at EU level could only be possible if it were supported by the scientific opinion of the French food safety agency, the AFSSA. The second phase of the initiative is currently being discussed by the national Parliament.
