India refutes pink bollworm resistance to Bt cotton

India’s Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) has deemed as unscientific and unacceptable a report by Monsanto on the development of insect resistance to genetically modified Bt cotton in the state of Gujarat. The purported resistance was of pink bollworms ( Pectinophora gossypiella) to the Btcry1Ac gene The GEAC says that the unusual survival of the pink bollworm in Saurashtra region of Gujarat was due to weather conditions favouring pest survival and not because of resistance as stated by Monsanto. The unusually high incidence of pink bollworms in the region is confirmed by data from the Central Institute of Cotton Research (Nagpur).
