Monsanto gets first food use approval for GM DT maize
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has granted an import approval to Monsanto to allow for food use of its genetically modified drought-tolerant maize, MON87460. FSANZ considers food derived from MON87460 “as safe and wholesome as food from other commercial maize varieties”. This is the first food use approval for the crop by a national regulator. Monsanto has also filed applications seeking: food and feed use, and environmental release approval with the US (February 2009) and Canada (March 2009); the EU (import and processing for food and feed use May 2009); and the Philippines (direct use August 2009). Japan granted cultivation approval for the drought-tolerant maize in December 2009.
