US fines Monsanto $2.5 m on GM cotton rules
The US EPA has fined Monsanto $2.5 million for “misbranding” of genetically modified insect-resistant cotton lines, Bollgard and Bollgard II. The company has agreed to pay the fine to resolve misbranding violations related to the sale and distribution of cotton seed products containing plant incorporated protectants in the form of Bt toxins, the EPA says. The settlement covers the sale and distribution of misbranded cotton seed without grower guides that include planting restrictions for ten counties in the state of Texas to avoid the risk of contamination. The violations took place in 22 states. It is the largest civil penalty settlement ever under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).
