US EPA denies second carbaryl petition

The US EPA has denied a petition by the Washington Toxics Coalition (WTC) to cancel all tolerances for the carbamate insecticide, carbaryl. The WTC filed the petition in 2005 ( Agrow No 507, p 14). The EPA turned down a similar petition by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in 2008 ( Agrow No 555, p 16). Most of the WTC petition was a word-for-word copy of the NRDC submission, but it did not raise tolerance-related issues, the EPA points out. The WTC petition focused on the ecological risk assessment supporting the 2004 interim re-registration decision for carbaryl.
