EU proposes more freedom on GM crop cultivation

EU member states will be given “full responsibility” on cultivating genetically modified crops, if new rules proposed by the European Commission this month are approved. The EU’s science-based authorisation system would be unchanged, stresses the Commission, but countries would have the freedom to allow, restrict or ban cultivation on part or all of their territories. EU Health and Consumers Commissioner John Dalli’s proposals are a bid to overcome ongoing delays in the EU approval process because of resistance to GM crops by some member states ( Agrow No 587, p 13).
