Alleged GMO site destroyed in Spain

French environmentalist group members have vandalised field plots in Spain advertised as the location of trials on genetically modified crops. The attack came in the municipality of Girona in northern Spain, from associates of the group, Fauchers Voluntaires, last month. The supposed trials were of Syngenta crops, but the company denies that the plot either was its own or that it had any GMO trials taking place, national media report. A Spanish anti-GMO group, Ecologistas en Accion, advertised a list of sites in May through the press, which the French group acted upon. Spanish seed association ANOVE warned its members to be vigilant against attacks. It nevertheless supports the public’s right to know trial locations, while warning that associates are vulnerable to attacks and calling on the authorities to control publication and take action against violent groups.
