India rules on GM peanut trials

India’s Genetic Engineering Approvals Committee (GEAC) has approved two applications by the Indian University of Agricultural Sciences (Bangalore) to conduct field trials of genetically modified peanuts with increased tolerance to drought, salt and cold. The GM peanuts express drought response transcription factor genes from Arabidopsis thaliana, DREB1A, DREB1B. The regulator said that biosafety issues in respect to crops expressing transgenic transcription factors were more complex than those involving other genes, and that guidelines needed to be developed.
