Brazil inspected 1 m tonnes agchems in 09
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture inspected over 1 million tonnes of pesticide products last year. It carried out almost 18,000 inspections of the use of pesticides, and over 19,500 visits to distributors across the country in its efforts to ensure safe sale and use of products. That involved over 2,000 staff, it says. The number of distributors in the country rose by 10.5% in 2009 to over 8,700, the Ministry calculates. Authorities in four states managed to inspect each vendor company at least five times, while those across Brazil expanded their education programmes on rational use of pesticides and IPM, training some 1,141 farmers.
