Industry condemns EU GMO cultivation plans

The European Commission’s proposals to allow national bans on cultivating EU-approved genetically modified crops have been roundly criticised by agricultural industry groups and raised doubts among members of the European Parliament. The proposals, issued in July, would give EU member states the freedom to allow, restrict or ban cultivation by adjusting the strength of co-existence measures ( Agrow No 596, p 4). The implications for trade and farmers’ choice are among the concerns expressed.
