Brazil court overturns Bayer GM maize approval

A Brazilian federal court judge has overturned the commercial approval of Bayer CropScience’s genetically modified glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink T25 maize. Bayer is “surprised” by the verdict. “The judge ruled that the approval for Bayer’s T25 corn event granted in 2007 is invalid due to formal regulatory aspects such as lacking an approved corresponding monitoring plan,” the company says. Bayer had submitted a plan, and was waiting on a decision for its approval by the authorities, it says. “Bayer submitted a monitoring plan for herbicide-tolerant T25 corn with the competent Brazilian authority, the CTNBio, in 2007, and updated it in 2008.”
