Monsanto seeks Australian GM canola tests
Monsanto has applied to test its genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready 2 canola in Australia. The company plans to conduct trials between March 2011 and December 2014 in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. It would carry out tests on a maximum of two 10 ha sites in the first year, eight in the second and third years and 20 in the fourth year. The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) approved the original Roundup Ready canola in 2004, but commercialisation was delayed for at least four years because of state moratoriums ( Agrow passim). The OGTR plans to issue a risk assessment and risk management plan on the latest application in October.
