France consults on contained use of GMOs
The French Ministries of Ecology and of Higher Education and Research have opened a public consultation on a draft decree on the contained use of genetically modified organisms. The decree has been mandated by Act 2008-595 in accordance with the government’s 2008 environmental initiative, the Grenelle de l'Environment. The Act supplemented the country’s existing legislation to bring it in line with EU rules on the contained use of GMOs (Directive 90/219) and the EU GMO registration Directive (2001/18). The European Commission took France to the European Court of Justice in 2006 over failure to fully implement Directive 90/219 ( Agrow No 489, p 6). The consultation ends on September 30th.
