Brazil law reinforces agchem container disposal rules
The Brazilian President has approved a law governing the collection of empty pesticide packaging. President Lula Ignacio da Silva has signed into force the national solid waste policy, covering the “correct treatment of solid waste” including agrochemical packaging. “Brazil has become the world reference for the safe destination of [empty] pesticide containers,” the President claims. This law reinforces rules adopted in 2002, and expands actions to other areas threatening the environment, the Ministry of Agriculture says. Senate commissions recommended approval of the rules last month ( Agrow No 596, p 14). Packaging will have to be manufactured from materials that allow its re-use or recycling, while manufacturers, importers, distributors and end-users will share responsibility for product life-cycles.
